Advertising Manager 131113: strategic authority, not campaign execution
Advertising Manager plans, directs and controls advertising activities within an organisation. The role sets advertising strategy, determines how products or services are presented, allocates resources and leads the people or agencies responsible for delivering campaigns.
Creating advertisements, buying media, managing social channels or coordinating individual campaigns is not enough by itself. The occupation is assessed at senior management level and must be distinguished from Advertising Specialist, Marketing Specialist, Sales and Marketing Manager and Public Relations Manager.
What the occupation covers
- setting organisation-wide or division-level advertising strategy;
- determining campaign direction, audience, media and presentation style;
- controlling advertising budgets, resources and external agencies;
- leading advertising staff and approving work for publication; and
- reviewing campaign performance and changing strategic priorities.
IML assesses senior functional management responsibility
The Institute of Managers and Leaders assesses 131113 as a senior-level management occupation. Its criteria expect the applicant to hold the most senior functional role for advertising in the organisation or division, with strategic decision-making authority and an appropriate reporting line to executive or divisional leadership.
Evidence should establish organisation size and complexity, reporting lines, subordinate managers or specialists, budgets and personally controlled advertising decisions. Strong technical advertising experience does not replace the required management level.
The occupation currently spans several visa lists
The STSOL result supports state-nominated subclass 190 and subclass 491 consideration. Core Skills mappings support the standard subclass 482 and direct-entry subclass 186 results, while regional and training mappings support subclass 494 and 407.
List coverage does not lower IML's senior-management threshold or guarantee nomination or sponsorship. The nominated position and evidence must still be Advertising Manager rather than a specialist or broader marketing role.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using 131113 for hands-on campaign execution without senior strategic authority.
- Confusing Advertising Manager with Marketing Specialist or Sales and Marketing Manager.
- Providing campaign results without organisational charts, budgets and reporting relationships.
- Assuming a small-business title proves the scale and complexity required by IML.
