Cafe or Restaurant Manager 141111: management scope and venue fit
Cafe or Restaurant Manager covers organising and controlling a dining establishment that prepares and serves food and beverages. The role is responsible for the operation as a whole, including staffing, stock, budgets, service standards, regulatory compliance and business performance.
A shift supervisor, floor supervisor or food and beverage attendant does not become a Cafe or Restaurant Manager merely by opening the venue, handling complaints or rostering a small team. The operating context also matters: fast-food and mainly takeaway outlets are not treated by VETASSESS as the normal setting for this occupation.
What the occupation covers
- planning menus and functions with chefs and kitchen staff;
- purchasing and pricing goods against budgets and sales targets;
- maintaining stock, financial and transaction records;
- selecting, training, rostering and supervising service and kitchen staff; and
- managing customer satisfaction, health requirements and venue performance.
VETASSESS looks at both the role and the establishment
VETASSESS classifies 141111 as Group C and requires a qualification at AQF Diploma level or higher, with the employment period depending on the relevance of the qualification pathway. Hospitality Management and Food and Beverage Services are identified as highly relevant fields; a cookery course focused only on cooking may not establish restaurant-management study.
The employment should show responsibility for all major aspects of the cafe or restaurant, not one service area. VETASSESS requires an organisational chart for this managerial occupation, and its guidance distinguishes full-service dining from fast-food, quick-service and mainly takeaway settings.
The current lists do not include every sponsored pathway
The STSOL result supports occupation-list access for state-nominated subclass 190 and subclass 491, but not subclass 189. The ROL result is relevant to subclass 494 and the training-list result relates to subclass 407.
This page does not show current CSOL access for the 482 or 186 pathways. A state or regional list match still does not confirm that the venue, management level, nomination stream or applicant meets the separate requirements.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a manager title from a fast-food or mainly takeaway outlet without checking the employment-context guidance.
- Describing only customer service, cash handling and shift supervision rather than whole-of-business management.
- Omitting the organisational chart and evidence of staffing, budgets and operating responsibility.
- Assuming this occupation currently appears on the CSOL because other hospitality managers do.
