Accountant (General) 221111: duties, assessment and caveats
Accountant (General) is centred on compliance-based financial reporting, auditing, insolvency, accounting information systems and associated record-keeping advice. It is not a catch-all code for anyone who handles invoices, payroll, reconciliations or routine financial administration.
The actual duties should distinguish the role from Management Accountant, Taxation Accountant, External Auditor, Bookkeeper and Accounts Clerk. A broad title such as accountant or finance officer does not decide the classification.
What the occupation covers
- preparing and analysing financial statements and compliance reports;
- examining income, expenditure, controls and accounting records;
- maintaining or advising on accounting information systems;
- supporting audits, insolvency work or financial investigations; and
- advising on statutory reporting and record-keeping obligations.
Three accounting bodies can assess 221111
The designated assessing authorities are CA ANZ, CPA Australia and IPA. Applicants choose one authority and follow that body's current requirements; they do not need three assessments. The published criteria focus on bachelor-level comparability, required accounting competency areas and English-language evidence.
A migration qualification assessment is not the same as professional membership, registration for every accounting service or a skilled-employment assessment. For example, CPA Australia treats qualification and skilled-employment assessments as separate services, with a suitable qualification outcome required before its employment assessment.
The employer-sponsored caveats matter
The MLTSSL result supports the displayed points-tested skilled pathways, and the CSOL result supports the occupation-level requirement for subclasses 482 and 186. However, the employer-sponsored instruments exclude positions that are clerical, bookkeeping or accounting-clerk roles. They also apply caveats where the sponsoring business has annual turnover below AUD1 million or fewer than five employees.
Those caveats do not automatically decide every other visa pathway, but they mean a green 482 or 186 list result must be read together with the position and business details.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing Accountant (General) for routine bookkeeping, accounts-payable or payroll work.
- Ignoring whether the duties better match Management Accountant or Taxation Accountant.
- Assuming an accounting degree automatically covers every mandatory competency area.
- Overlooking the business-size and clerical-position caveats for employer-sponsored pathways.
