Retail Pharmacist 251513: community practice, assessment and registration
Retail Pharmacist, also called Community Pharmacist, covers dispensing prescribed medicines to the public, checking their safe use, counselling customers and supplying non-prescription medicines in a community pharmacy. The role combines clinical medicine responsibilities with supervision and regulated record keeping.
The setting and duties distinguish this occupation from Hospital Pharmacist and Industrial Pharmacist. Pharmacy retail management, sales assistance, dispensing support or technician work without pharmacist-level professional responsibility does not fit 251513.
What the occupation covers
- reviewing prescriptions, medicine histories, dosage and compatibility;
- dispensing and labelling medicines and counselling customers on safe use;
- supplying non-prescription medicines and health information;
- maintaining controlled-drug, prescription and stock records; and
- supervising interns, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy sales staff.
APC skills assessment and pharmacist registration are separate
The Australian Pharmacy Council provides migration skills assessment outcomes and operates different assessment streams according to where an applicant qualified and registered. Overseas-trained applicants may need an eligibility check and the examination attached to their stream, while Australian or New Zealand graduates can have different routes.
A migration skills assessment outcome does not itself authorise practice. Registration is administered through the Pharmacy Board of Australia and Ahpra, and applicants may also need supervised practice, examinations or other registration steps appropriate to their pathway.
