Physiotherapist 252511: migration assessment and registration are separate
Physiotherapist assesses movement and functional problems, develops treatment and rehabilitation plans, delivers physical interventions and evaluates patient progress. Practice may span musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiorespiratory, paediatric, rehabilitation and other clinical settings.
Physiotherapy is a regulated health profession in Australia. A migration skills assessment, professional registration and an employer's clinical requirements are related but separate processes, and success in one does not automatically complete the others.
What the occupation covers
- assessing movement, pain, strength, function and rehabilitation needs;
- forming physiotherapy diagnoses and treatment plans;
- delivering exercise, manual, physical and educational interventions;
- monitoring outcomes and adapting treatment to patient progress; and
- maintaining clinical records and working within professional standards.
The Australian Physiotherapy Council sets migration criteria
The Australian Physiotherapy Council conducts the migration skills assessment. Its current eligibility routes include an approved Australian qualification, an APC Final Certificate, certain legacy equivalence certificates, or specified New Zealand qualification, registration and experience combinations. Applicants must also meet the applicable physiotherapy English-language standard.
The Council distinguishes the Skills Assessment Certificate used for migration from the Final Certificate used to support an application for general registration. Overseas-qualified physiotherapists who do not yet satisfy a migration route may first need the appropriate assessment pathway for professional entry.
Broad visa coverage does not authorise clinical practice
The MLTSSL and Core Skills mappings support all of the skilled, graduate, regional, training and employer-sponsored results displayed for 252511. These are occupation-list results, not registration outcomes.
A person must hold the required registration with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia before practising in Australia. Applicants should separately confirm the skills-assessment, registration and visa requirements that apply to their circumstances.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating an APC migration Skills Assessment Certificate as general registration to practise.
- Assuming an overseas physiotherapy qualification automatically meets an APC eligibility route.
- Using physiotherapist for massage, fitness, therapy-aide or other support work without physiotherapy scope.
- Claiming skilled employment without supplying the evidence required for the period claimed.
