Architectural Draftsperson 312111: building drawings and documentation
Architectural Draftsperson prepares drawings, specifications and documentation for architectural design and building projects. The role interprets design concepts, planning requirements, building regulations and construction information to produce coordinated documentation for approval, tender and construction.
The occupation is distinct from Architect, Civil Engineering Draftsperson, Interior Designer and general BIM management. The main work should be architectural drafting for buildings, not civil, structural, mechanical, electrical or hydraulic documentation.
What the occupation covers
- interpreting architectural concepts, plans, regulations and codes;
- preparing sketches, working drawings and specifications;
- developing approval, tender, construction and as-built packages;
- coordinating BIM models, schedules and consultant information; and
- revising documentation after client, authority or construction feedback.
VETASSESS requires relevant drafting work and a portfolio
VETASSESS classifies Architectural Draftsperson as a Group C occupation. Architecture, Building Design and Architectural Drafting are identified as highly relevant fields, with the required employment period depending on the applicable qualification pathway.
Applicants must provide supplementary evidence of architectural drafting duties, such as a portfolio and project list. BIM work is relevant only when it demonstrates appropriate architectural documentation; strategic BIM management with little drafting may fit elsewhere.
Different lists support different visa routes
The STSOL result supports state-nominated subclass 190 and subclass 491 consideration. Current Core Skills mappings support the standard subclass 482 and direct-entry subclass 186 results, while the regional and training mappings support subclass 494 and 407.
