Electrical Engineering Technician 312312: technical support, not electrician work
Electrical Engineering Technician supports Electrical Engineers and Engineering Technologists by testing electrical systems, collecting and presenting technical data and assisting with cost estimates, research and experimentation. The focus is engineering technical support rather than professional engineering design authority.
It is also different from Electrician (General). Installing and connecting building wiring as a licensed trade is not automatically electrical engineering technician work, even where the employee uses test instruments or reads electrical drawings.
What the occupation covers
- conducting tests and recording electrical-system performance;
- preparing charts, calculations, tabulations and technical reports;
- assisting engineers with research, experimentation and system modifications;
- helping estimate materials, quantities and project costs; and
- performing technical workshop or laboratory functions in support of engineering work.
TRA is the designated assessing authority
The current migration instruments identify Trades Recognition Australia as the assessing authority for 312312. That designation should not be confused with Engineers Australia's assessment of Electrical Engineering Draftsperson or professional engineering occupations.
TRA operates several assessment programs, and the applicable route depends on matters such as the visa, qualification location and applicant circumstances. Before preparing evidence, applicants should identify the program TRA says applies rather than assuming that a process used for an electrician or another technical occupation is interchangeable.
Broad list access does not settle the occupation match
The MLTSSL and CSOL results produce occupation-list access across the displayed skilled and employer-sponsored pathways, with additional regional and training results for subclasses 494 and 407.
Those results do not turn electrical trade work, drafting or professional engineering into 312312. The evidence should establish the engineering-support context, the systems tested and the technical outputs prepared for engineers or technologists.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using 312312 for electrical installation and wiring work that is better classified as an electrician trade.
- Confusing the occupation with Electrical Engineering Draftsperson or a professional Electrical Engineer.
